Ernst Hoffmann is a young lawyer, musician and writer who lives in two dimensions at once: the imaginary world of his artworks and in the ordinary reality of a small German town. Imagining being a young student Anselmus in his fairy world, Hoffmann will experience the most amazing and dangerous adventures, which may turn out to be just fantasies.
The film is based on life and work of the classic German Romanticist – the writer, artist and composer Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann. The puppets are created by hand and designed by Mikhail Shemyakin, a world-famous Russian artist and sculptor. The film is a romantic flight of fantasy based on motifs from Hoffmann's diaries and fiction.
