TWENTY YEARS OF AGE - 29min
In 1980, Kim Du-gi, Kim Rae-yong, Park In-gyun, and Park Jong-min had all just turned twenty years of age, and they were freshmen in college. The newbies signed up for a club, “Democratic Culture Research,” and started to take part in the democratic movement together with senior students in school. When the martial law was declared nationwide on May 18, they were making copies of flyers to be used the next day as usual. That’s when soldiers armed with guns barged into the club room; without knowing why, the young students were dragged into the basement of the Security Force based in Chuncheon.
5.27 EXTERNAL FLAME - ANOTHER 5.18 UPRISING - 26min
In May 1980, with the country placed under martial law by the new military regime, demonstrations were organized all over the Jeollabuk region. Among them, high school students based in Jeonju City planned to stage a joint demonstration condemning the massacre in Gwangju. The plan failed, except for one demonstration that took place at Sinheung High School on May 27. Students took over the broadcasting studio and gathered on the playground, shouting “down with the new military regime and Chun Doo-hwan!” Upon leaving the school’s main gate, the demonstrators were stopped by soldiers armed with tanks, helicopters, and machine guns.
