Academy and BAFTA Award winner Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies, Dunkirk, The BFG) will star as Maurice Flitcroft, a dreamer and unrelenting optimist, who managed to gain entry to The British Open Golf Championship qualifying in 1976 and subsequently shot the worst round in Open history, becoming a folk hero in the process. The heart-warming true story will be directed by BAFTA Award winning filmmaker and actor Craig Roberts (Just Jim, Eternal Beauty) based on the adapted screenplay by Simon Farnaby, two-time BAFTA Award nominated writer and BAFTA Award winner for Best Children’s Film of the global box-office success Paddington 2, from the book “The Phantom Of The Open” written by Scott Murray and Farnaby.
